General information and resources

Who can apply?

To qualify for the Federal Direct Loan program, you must meet all the following criteria:

• Be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident or an eligible non-citizen and have a valid U.S. Social Security Number -SSN
• Be registered as a regular student in a degree program¹ : Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D.
• Be registered at least half time²
• Haven’t borrow in excess of annual or aggregate loan limits
• Comply with the U.S. Selective Services System registration requirements
• Not be incarcerated or in default on a Title IV loan
• Not have been convicted for the possession or sale of illegal drugs while you were receiving Federal Student Aid - FSA
• Maintain satisfactory academic progress - SAP

Please note that students enrolled in language classes, programs of less than one year, programs that don't lead to a degree (e.g. "special studies" or études libres, BAC 120 credits, certificate programs, (specialized) graduate diploma programs, a major, a minor and microprograms) courses or programs offered whole or in part by telecommunications or correspondence, U.S. students under a "study abroad" or "student exchange" program and programs leading to the MD degree are not entitled to receive Federal Direct Loan funds at Université de Montréal.

For undergraduate students that means 6 credits or more for each session; for graduate students the status (half time, part time – at least 6 credits – or full time) is determined by each Department, therefore, for more information, please contact your program administrator
